Angklung Musical Instruments Typical Of Indonesia

HISTORY FROM ANGKLUNG

Angklung is a musical instrument made out of two bamboo tubes embedded in a frame which is also made of bamboo. The tubes are honed so as to produce tones that resonate when struck. Two tubes are then tuned to follow octave scales. To play it, the bottom of the frame is held by one hand while the other wiggles angklung quickly from left side to right and vice versa. This will result in a periodic tone. Thus, it takes as many as three or more angklung players in the ensemble, to produce a complete melody.

Angklung has been popular all over Southeast Asia, but actually originated from Indonesia and has been played by ethnic Sundanese in West Java since ancient times. The word "angklung" comes from two words "angka" and "lung". angka mean "tone", and lung means "breaking up" or "lost". Angklung so means "disconnected tone".

In the Hindu period and the Kingdom of Sunda, West Java, Angklung plays an important role in some of the rituals of the Sundanese people in everyday life. As intermediaries in rituals, angklung is played to respecting Dewi Sri, the goddess of fertility, with the hope that the country and their lives can be blessed. At a later date, according to Song of Sunda, this instrument is also used by the Kingdom of Sunda for encouragement in a battle situation in Bubat War.

The oldest angklung still exist until now is Angklung Gubrag. Angklung is made in the 17th century in Jasinga, Bogor. At this time, some from ancient times angklung still stored in Sri Baduga Museum, Bandung.
